Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,
And Nod is a little head,
And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies
Is a wee one’s trundle-bed.
So shut your eyes while mother sings
Of wonderful sights that be,
And you shall see the beautiful things
As you rock in the misty sea,
Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

I remember what it was like in that first few weeks as a new mom. The sleepless nights, the diapers, the feedings. At times it was so completely overwhelming.
But.
In the quiet of the night, I remember holding my baby close, so close I could hear my heart beating. I remember staring down at those little fingers clutching mine as I held his bottle gently. I remember being in awe about how something so small could completely own my heart and soul. I remember watching him dream, and with a trickle of milk dripping down his chin, I remember seeing him smile. The sleepless nights, the diapers, and the feedings were forgotten in that moment.
At first, little Ashton wasn’t very interested in sleeping when she came to see me. She was much more interested in eating and exploring the scenery around her after discovering that she could control her head all by herself. But, after lots of snuggling, swaddling, and rocking, she settled down, and while she drifted off into her baby dreams I quietly went to work illustrating the beautiful beginning of her precious love story.
I love simple emotive images. In placing Ashton in her mother’s arms and taking a step back, I caught myself getting a bit emotional as I watched her look at her newborn daughter. It was a precious moment for me, and I am so pleased I was able to capture that moment in an image that they will be able to have forever.
Ashton, you and your momma did a wonderful job; I hope you will come back to see me so we can illustrate the next chapter of your beautiful story.
