I have met some absolutely AMAZING teens over the last few years. I love keeping in touch with them and learning about all the wonderful things they are doing in their lives. With all the negativity in the media about youth violence, bullying, suicide, etc… it is easy to get down on teens these days. It is easy to lump them all together and proclaim them to be apathetic, lazy, disrespectful, and selfish. And…while it might be true that there are teens out there who do fit the description above, I also KNOW that there are teens out there who are exactly the opposite. For one reason or another, well, we just don’t hear as much about the wonderful things they do.
In my 7 years of teaching, I have met students who have collected toys to send overseas to children, I have watched students donate GALLONS of blood to the local blood banks, I have read articles about students who have run cross country races with a special needs student so they can cheer her on to the end, I have talked to teens who have shown me what REAL faith is all about, and I have witnessed students who believe so much in something that they will run across the state and all the way to the capital to make a point and bring attention to an important cause.
I KNOW that we have some amazing teens in our communities.
